Students at Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy in Birtley have much to celebrate as they collect their A level and vocational qualification results. We are very proud that 45% of all grades awarded were A*-B; with 77% of all grades awarded being A*-C.

There were excellent results for many students. Top-performing students include Ruby – A* A* A*, Jeevan – A* A* A, Hayden – A* A* B, Sophie – A*A A, Sam – A* A A, Anya  – A* A B and Jessica – Distinction* A* B. These students, alongside many others, met their offers to study at prestigious local and national universities, including Durham, Newcastle, Warwick and York. Many students overcame extreme personal difficulties to gain their grades. 

Lord Lawson students have also been successful in gaining higher level apprenticeships and degree apprenticeships in construction and the civil service notable local employers, ESH construction and Gateshead council. Vocational subjects performed particularly well at the school this year, including Psychology and Health and Social Care. An incredible 80% of Health and Social Care students received a Distinction*, the highest grade achievable.

Overall, results showed that the school continues to make very good progress. Strong results were gained by students across a broad curriculum: leading subjects include Mathematics (with an impressive 50% of students gaining A*-A grades), Sociology (with 62.5% of students gaining A*-A grades) together with English Language and History. Results were much improved this year in the Sciences, Health and Social Care, and Psychology, reflecting the hard work of staff, students and senior leaders.

Dr Andrew Fowler, the academy’s Principal, said, “I congratulate all our students, who have worked so hard for these results. There are many outstanding results here, reflecting continued improvements in teaching and learning at Lord Lawson. I would also like to thank all our parents and teachers, who have done so much to support our students during their seven years at secondary school. This cohort of students experienced interruptions to their schooling at critical points, from COVID and from industrial action, when they were in years 9, 10 and 11. Despite this, they have performed brilliantly. I want to thank our students for being such wonderful members of our school community, and I wish them all well, as they go on to take up places at university, in apprenticeships and employment.”

Assistant Principal – Head of Sixth Form Jane Laidlaw said, “I am delighted with all the results, as the students have worked extremely hard and shown determination to reach their goals. Some students have overcome difficult personal circumstances and made significant progress during their time in our sixth form. Students should feel very proud of their achievements. I wish all our Y13 students the very best in the future and hope that they will continue to make our school community proud as they continue to grow.”
